What is Reiki?
Reiki is a hands on healing art which was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui in Japan. The word Reiki derives from two Japanese words, Rei and Ki meaning a Universal Life Force of Energy. There are many ways that Reiki is practiced. The art is passed from Master to student. Reiki is a widely known type of energy healing which involves the direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening one's energy system, also known as aura. Chi is the term used for the underlying force that the Universe is made of and is used by Chinese mystics and martial artist. Mystics from many cultures relate to the physical universe being made of an underlying form of something. Modern physics research is now understanding that our Universe is made of energy subjected to and affected by thought. The mystics also say that this underlying form is affected by thought claiming that we create our own reality from thinking and the thoughts we have and share between us. If we stop and reflect for a moment, we can imagine the implications of the universe which is around us, made from energy which can be manipulated by our thoughts. This is the implication of Quantum Physics and ancient Metaphysics. Some say that this may make illness and miraculous cures, especially those with no apparent cause, easier to explain. A good example of this is prayer. Research has shown that prayer improves the health of those who are prayed for. Intent prayer is thought to send thoughts such as `I wish this to happen.' Reiki followers believe that if the world is energy which is subject to the power of though the prayers must work. It is very easy to learn Reiki and it is very simple to use. All can benefit from it. Reiki is one of many healing forms that used natural forces given by ancient Chinese mystics. Some healing forms which use Chi energy are Chi Gong, Pranic Healing, Chelation and Polarity Balancing. Apparently all use the same energies but differ in their techniques of application and the quality of energy known as vibration. Reiki, meaning Universal Life Force Energy refers to the energy itself rather than the specific techniques which are taught by Reiki Masters. The proper name for this technique is the Usui System of Natural Healing, names after the founder, Dr Mikao Usui. Reiki is the common name used today. Reiki consists of a practitioner placing his or her hands upon the person wishing to be healed with the intent for the healing to occur rather than the energy to begin flowing. Reiki is said to be smart since the energy knows where to go and what to do when it gets there or it is being directed by a higher intelligence. Apparently the energy is able to manage its own flow to and within those receiving it by drawing through the healer the exact amount the recipient needs. This is supposed to happen without the healing directly consciously intervening. The healer should get out of the way, although keep the healing space open whilst listening and watching for signs of what to do next.

An overview of Reiki
The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words, Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". Reiki is in fact "spiritually guided life force energy." which is used to relieve illness and other maladies. Reiki is a technique which can also be used to relieve stress and it helps to promote relaxation. It is a technique that involves the laying on of hands of the practitioner to the person whom he is trying to administer healing. Reiki is based on the idea that there is a hidden life force or energy within us all which is what causes all living creatures to have life. If the life force or energy is low, then the person becomes ill or feels low and depressed. If the life force is high, then we all feel in optimum health. Many people who have undergone a Reiki treatment report that they experience a wonderful radiance that travels not only throughout their body but also around it. This is because the Reiki treats not only the body but the emotions, mind and spirit. Reiki creates a wonderful feeling of peace security and well being. Part of the process of Reiki healing is the idea that the person who is accepting the healing must take responsibility for their wellbeing. This means they have to actually take an active part in the Reiki healing process. This is usually done by the person making a firm commitment to themselves. Because it is such a simple though effective technique, Reiki can be used by anyone. It is a natural way of spiritual healing which works well in conjunction with other more conventional methods and helps to promote a faster recovery. Reiki is taught in a "class" situation. The ability is passed from the master to the student during a process called attunement. The pupil is able to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy which can be used to enhance and improve a person's quality of life. Many people assume Reiki to be a "cult" or some type of religion, this is not true. Reiki is not dependent on whether you believe in Christianity, Buddhism or any other religion. It works no matter who you believe your higher deity to be. Reiki can be taught to anyone, you don't have to be an intellectual or a spiritual person, It doesn't matter what your background is, whether you are rich or poor. All you need to believe is that it works. Even though Reiki is not a "religion" it still has principles and ethics which should be upheld. This includes living in harmony and peace with others.

Many people assume that reiki is an ancient healing art which was developed hundreds or even thousands of years ago. In fact it was developed only in the 1900's in Japan. Reiki principles are based on the Universal life force energies and is a hands on healing art. There are many ways of using Reiki with the art being passed from a master to his pupil in stages and over a period of time. The word reiki is copied from two Japanese words Rei and Ki. These are the words that denote the "Universal Life Force and energy. Reiki uses a person's own aura to assist in their healing, This aura is known as Chi and when Reki is used, the practitioner helps to strengthen the aura of the person they are healing. Chi is a mystical term which is used by many in both healing and the martial arts. There are many other mystical cultures which also use the universal life force for healing, however they are known under different names. It is now a well known researched fact that the universe is made up of energy and it is this energy which is tapped into when practitioners use Reiki. They are able to adapt and use this positive force when healing a person. Many critics of Reiki think of this type of healing as a scam; however practitioners claim that it is the energy surrounding every person which can be utilised by even our thoughts to ensure healing takes place. They also claim that reiki can also be based on the "sciences" of both Quantum Physics and Metaphysics and may also be a deciding factor in why some people often make miraculous recoveries from often life threatening illnesses. Reiki practice is based on the actual universal forces present around a person There are many anecdotal and recorded instances of unexplained healing for many people whether it is through prayer, the laying on of hands or any other form of healing. As it is thought the core principle of all these healing strategies is the utilisation of universal energy, it can be assumed that Reiki healing is actually based on principles as old as time itself. It is assumed by many people that Reiki healing is a difficult art to master, when in fact it is one of the simplest. It is also very easy to use and practise. When using Reiki for healing, the practitioner places their hands upon the person who wishes to be healed with the wish for the energies around that person to be used for healing. Many people swear by Reiki and feel it is a very useful form of alternative treatment.

Reiki as a spiritual healing system
Reiki is a spiritual healing system that has its origins in Japan.
It basically consists of a "laying on of hands" type movement whereby the Reiki practitioner uses his or her hands to travel along your body - without actually touching the skin. The hands appear to touch the skin, but rest a few centimetres above it. The philosophy behind this type of healing is that there is amongst us all an unseen life force or energy which flows through all of us. This life force or life force energy (call it what you will) is the very essence of what it means to be alive. The Japanese believe that we are at a low point in our health if our life force energy is low - this renders us to be more prone to sickness and getting tired quickly.
If on the other hand, our life force energy is at a high level - then we are full of beans, and buzzing around full of energy and in good health.
The actual word, "REIKI", itself consists of two Japanese words: REI which in effect means "God's wisdom or the Higher Power" and KI which is "life force energy". Therefore, by combining these two words we see that the word REIKI actually means a life force energy that is spiritually guided.
Although Reiki itself is spiritual in essence, it is not a way or life, not is it a religion. Reiki does not require that you believe in something before you can learn it and use it. Quite the opposite in fact.Reiki will "work" whether you believe it will or not.
So, what exactly does a Reiki treatment feel like?
A Reiki treatment will (or rather should) leave you feeling warm and glowing and re-energised. Sometimes, a Reiki treatment may leave you feeling as though you have just experienced an altered state of consciousness or had some sort of spiritual experience.
Because Reiki doesn't just treatment one local area - but rather the whole person, which is the body part and the mind, spirit and emotions, you are left feeling totally relaxed and with a sense of well being. It kind of gives you a "warm feeling all over".
Reiki has been used in all sorts of treatments for many medical afflictions. It has been used to heal most probably every known illeness such as insomnia, flu, broken bones, headaches etc. As well as being used on its own as a therapy, it also works alongside other therapies to promote a faster healing period and to provide relief from side effects.
Reiki is not "taught" as such but is passed, or transferred, to the student during a Reiki class. The Reiki master will pass on his ability during an "attunement" and in so doing will allow the student to tap into a limitless supply of life force energy. In this way, Reiki has been taught to thousands of people all around the world, with different backgrounds, walks of life, and cultures.

Reiki - pronounced `ray-key', is a non-invasive, form of alternative/complementary healing/therapy. Reiki comes from the Japanese words "rei" which means "universal" and "ki" which means "life force". Drawing upon what is known as "universal life force energy" or "chi", energy is passed through the giver to the receiver.
The receiver may (or may not) feel hot/warm or cold sensations as the unseen energy moves around the body directing itself to where the receiver most needs it. This can be on a physical, psychological or emotional level. It helps to re-balance the body and also to clear the mind, calm emotions and re-connect with our spirituality.
The receiver is normally laying down in order to receive this treatment, but it can also be received in a sitting position, which makes it a good all round treatment for those who have little or restricted movement, or those who need to remain in a particular position. The receiver remains fully clothed throughout the treatment.
There is no massage and no pressure exerted.
The giver administers a treatment by positioning their hands in certain positions around the body (predominantly chakra points - but other areas relating to major organs are also covered), working on the head, eyes, ears, throat, chest, heart, stomach, reproductive area, knees and feet, back, shoulders etc, amongst others.
The giver does not even have to touch the receiver in order to give the treatment, their hands resting, perhaps, just a few centimetres away. Therefore, if the receiver may feel a little claustrophobic if someone's hands are over their face, then treatment can still be just as effective a slight distance away.
Reiki can be learnt by anyone who has a sincere desire to help improve health and well-being. It is totally safe and natural. It can be equally used for self-treatments or to help others.
This form of therapy is unique in the fact that it does not drain the giver as they are a channel for the energy to flow through rather than giving their own energy in the healing process.
It can be incorporated within other therapies as well, massage being one in particular, as it can aid in release of muscle tensions - where over-massaging can cause discomfort, Reiki can work gently releasing the tension in knotted muscles without an ounce of pressure.
For those who have had completed advanced training of Reiki, absent or distance healing can also be achieved, where healing energies can be directed to those who the therapist can't physically be able to reach.
It is easy for people to learn Reiki. The best way is to find yourself a workshop (which should ideally be taken during the course of a couple of days), where you will meet a Reiki Master, discuss the principles of Reiki, learn some history and experience Reiki for yourself. In the same workshop, you will become `attuned' to Reiki (there are four attunements which are given to you by the Reiki Master in order for you to access the `universal energy' and you will then learn how to give treatments, both to others and to yourself.
This initial workshop is normally called the First Degree. There are several further Degrees to attain if you wish to learn more, taking you up to Reiki Master level. Predominantly, you would obtain your First Degree, and then practice with your new found skills until confident and knowledgeable enough before proceeding on to the Second and Third Degrees.
Don't think Reiki is just exclusively for people, Reiki can be used safely on the family pet!
