What is Reiki?
Reiki is a hands on healing art which was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui in Japan. The word Reiki derives from two Japanese words, Rei and Ki meaning a Universal Life Force of Energy. There are many ways that Reiki is practiced. The art is passed from Master to student. Reiki is a widely known type of energy healing which involves the direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening one's energy system, also known as aura. Chi is the term used for the underlying force that the Universe is made of and is used by Chinese mystics and martial artist. Mystics from many cultures relate to the physical universe being made of an underlying form of something. Modern physics research is now understanding that our Universe is made of energy subjected to and affected by thought. The mystics also say that this underlying form is affected by thought claiming that we create our own reality from thinking and the thoughts we have and share between us. If we stop and reflect for a moment, we can imagine the implications of the universe which is around us, made from energy which can be manipulated by our thoughts. This is the implication of Quantum Physics and ancient Metaphysics. Some say that this may make illness and miraculous cures, especially those with no apparent cause, easier to explain. A good example of this is prayer. Research has shown that prayer improves the health of those who are prayed for. Intent prayer is thought to send thoughts such as `I wish this to happen.' Reiki followers believe that if the world is energy which is subject to the power of though the prayers must work. It is very easy to learn Reiki and it is very simple to use. All can benefit from it. Reiki is one of many healing forms that used natural forces given by ancient Chinese mystics. Some healing forms which use Chi energy are Chi Gong, Pranic Healing, Chelation and Polarity Balancing. Apparently all use the same energies but differ in their techniques of application and the quality of energy known as vibration. Reiki, meaning Universal Life Force Energy refers to the energy itself rather than the specific techniques which are taught by Reiki Masters. The proper name for this technique is the Usui System of Natural Healing, names after the founder, Dr Mikao Usui. Reiki is the common name used today. Reiki consists of a practitioner placing his or her hands upon the person wishing to be healed with the intent for the healing to occur rather than the energy to begin flowing. Reiki is said to be smart since the energy knows where to go and what to do when it gets there or it is being directed by a higher intelligence. Apparently the energy is able to manage its own flow to and within those receiving it by drawing through the healer the exact amount the recipient needs. This is supposed to happen without the healing directly consciously intervening. The healer should get out of the way, although keep the healing space open whilst listening and watching for signs of what to do next.

No one is immune. For people from champion athletes to desk-bound white-collar professionals, many simple acts of life--a relaxing evening stroll through the neighborhood, an exhilarating run along a sandy beach, just bending down to tie a loose shoelace-are often acts of torture. The walking wounded suffer from torn rotator cuffs, tennis elbow, jogger's knees, bad backs, stiff necks, sore feet, and swollen ankles. It could, without exaggeration, be called a modem epidemic. Spending eight or more hours a day in an office chair, staring at a computer screen can cause backaches, hunched shoulders and a painful neck. Try these yogic stretches a few times throughout the day, to feel better in the office.
1. DEEP BREATHING - A few times throughout the day, pay attention to your breathing. Inhale and exhale deeply through the nose. This type of breath is very calming and centering.
2. HEAD ROTATION - Rotate your head towards the right side in a few large circles. Make sure that your shoulders don't move and the only thing that moves is your head: it releases the tension of your neck muscles. Then do a few circles towards the left side.
3. SHOULDER ROTATION - Lift your shoulders up to meet your ears, then rotate them towards the back, so that the shoulder blades meet each other, and then lift them towards the ears again, through the front. Do three-five very slow circles and then reverse it and rotate your shoulders towards the front, also three-five times.
4. BACK OPENER -mThis one is perfect if you have hunched back. Interlace your fingers behind the back of your chair, trying to keep the arms straight. If this isn't possible, use a belt to grab on to. Arch your back, so that your chest goes forward. Breathe for five slow deep breaths through the nose.
5. TWIST - Place your right palm on the back of your chair and your left palm on your right thigh. On the exhale twist to the right, looking over your right shoulder. Stay for five slow deep breaths and then reverse it, twisting to the other side.
6. FORWARD BEND - While sitting on the chair, spread your legs wide. On the exhale, fold forward, so that your torso falls in between your legs. Stay for five slow deep breaths. You can shake your shoulders in this position, it releases the tension from the upper and middle back.
7. Closed Eyes - Finally, spend a minute or two with your eyes closed. This gives your body and mind a nice break.
You can do all or some of these stretches as many times as you wish throughout the day. If you practice the stretches often, you will feel the most benefits.
